I tried to be inconspicuous as I photographed this traditionally dressed man standing along Doha's Al Corniche. He became aware that a few of us Americans were photographing him, and it was almost as if he were posing, as he moved closer and closer to the camera, situating himself in photographically pleasing locations. After I took my photos, a few Americans sidled up to him and leaned in to have their buddies take photos of them beside him. I was not able to put my finger on exactly why, but I felt morally wrong about this, as if we were desecrating his calm presence and making him into a piece of a tourist sideshow; and I wanted no part in that.
